Kaoru was sent to NERV Headquarters as the replacement of Asuka, and refered to as the "Fifth Children," but due to the unusual synchronization rate, Kaoru was determined to be the 17th Angel (The last one). Kaoru made friends with Ikari Shinji when he first met him, and Shinji liked him too, for Kaoru accepted him as himself, but when Kaoru was determined as an Angel, Shinji had no choice but to destroy Kaoru at LILITH, the source of all life. Shinji mourns Kaoru's death, saying that he should die, but then Misato justifies his life by saying that only Shinji had the desire to live.
