Ikari Shinji

Shinji is the main character of EVA and the underdog, and the chief pilot of the Humanoid weapon EVA-01. Although the son of Ikari Gendou, head of NERV, Shinji feels uncomfortable toward Gendou. Gendou had left Shinji when he was a child, and haven't met for a very long time. On the other hand, Shinji and his guardian Katsuragi Misato acts toward each other like mother and son. When Shinji first arrived at NERV headquarters, he was self-abashed and lacks confidence, but fortunately, as he gains more experience fighting the Angels (plus some help from Misato) he gradually gained more confidence and allowed himself to get close to people. Shinji has a very introspective and quiet personality, but can goes into a "berserker" mode in desperate combat situations, which would be won a few minutes later, end results being a heavily thrashed Angel.
