Gosh, you should've seen the ones at Anime Expo last year. They

It kinda hit me why it would be popular with cosplayers. Since much
of ST is about cosplaying (i.e. theatre shows). <g> My theory
though.

Well, you don't have to go that far. Just look at Sailor Moon and all
the American "male" fans... a manga/show that was intended purely
for a shoujo audience in Japan.
