I finally got the DVD, and it was well worth the wait. The first
thing I noticed was the impressive quality of the A/V. The video
quality is some of the best I've ever seen in any film; my only
complaint is that I don't think my TV can handle the resolution
well. The picture comes in perfectly with lots of color and
vibrance, utilizing MPEG-2 to its fullest. It's single-sided
double-layered, although altogether it's only two hours long.
Kudos goes to Sega, Animate Film, Bandai Visual, or whoever
it was that brought this to DVD. Of course I'm probably just
comparing this to the original fansub of ST I had seen (which
was abominable quality) and my limited DVD collection of maybe
four or five discs total, most of which are relatively old anime
series.
As for any extra 'goodies' or such features on the DVD, there
aren't really any, just a menu that lets you access any chapter
of any episode. There was a small booklet in the case, however,
which explained a lot of little details in the game, including
such tidbits of information as a brief explanation of the
Hokushin-Ittou-ryuu that Sakura uses, and the fact that that guy
mopping the deck behind Oogami at the end of episode 2 is in fact
Kayama Yuu'ichi who makes his real appearance in the second game.
I was rather impressed by Takano Urara's (Maria's) english (as well
as her Russian, to be sure, but I don't know Russian), and thus it
was not altogether surprising that she was the consultant for
English for the film's production. Also, while I don't have any
knowledge of French, Orikasa Ai's (Ayame's) French sounded quite
good, flowing smoothly. Subtitling Kohran's Kansai-ben in Kantou
was a nice touch, too. ^_^
For those of you who haven't seen the anime at all, I recommend
getting it if you are an ST fan (and if you aren't, why are you on
this ML?), at least from A.D. Vision.
