Answering a few of these points... To Ria: > Yes, Red spelled her name in romanji as "Reni", but I spelled her name as > "Leni" in my website. I think "Leni" sounds more German than "Reni"... then > again, I'm not a die-hard fan like most people, and considering that--- I'd > appreciate it if I wouldn't get flamed by die-hard fans for "mispelling" > Leni/Reni's name wrong. Pardon me, Ria, but I wasn't flaming you. No need to be sensitive. I was offering a _correction_ so you- and others- could be consistent and perhaps fall in line with RED's official intentions. > It doesn't really bother me whenever I see someone spelling > it as "Reni" rather than "Leni" or vice-versa, but what really pisses me off > is when people INSIST that the real "spelling" is "Reni" rather than "Leni." (Shrug) It's a indisputable fact. RED spells it that way (see the "Haoh Sakura Taisen 2 Game Special" and other ST 2 books), has "Reni" sign her name with an R (see page 5 of the Teigeki Graph limited edition booklet), and that pretty much is definitive, in my opinion. If you haven't seen these examples, do you want to see them for yourself? I'd be happy to scan them and send them to you. All disputation aside, my point is, these aren't our characters. I don't feel anyone- fan or otherwise- has a right to take creative license if the authors have officially "set in stone"- and in print- how they want the name spelled. To Niki-chan: > -_- Jesus...honestly, who cares? I bet Hiroi Ouji and the staff of RED does. > This is just an argument for arguments > sake...and I don't want to get anymore messages about it being Reni or Leni. Whoops! Looks like you just did . > Both are generally accepted. If you don't want to use it, then don't. But > don't harp on someone else cuz Reni is the 'official' whatchamawhosit. Speaking as the 42 year-old father that I am, how hard would it be for you to take a civil approach instead of an unpleasant one? And how hard is it for someone to say- "OK, I thought it was 'Leni', but RED says it's 'Reni'. They're the authorities, so... I can fix it. One letter. Easy." - instead of getting bent out of shape and insisting on your own interpretation? > Only people w/WAY too much time on their hands care. Or, perhaps, people like me who've been riding along with Sakura Taisen since its inception in 1996, and who care about being accurate and consistent in all my anime and game communications and writings. I'll always follow the official line, as it's no effort to do so. To Michael: > Sorry to bust in this thread but IMO, it should be Reni just because of > what Richard said. If RED intended it to be Reni from the start, despite > the potential unfaithful to German eror, it's still Reni. Thank you sir . Glad to have your input. > It doesn't bother me at all if you say Leni, but here's one thing to > consider... you're always right when you romanize things with katakana. Absolutely. > Even if JASTIN = Justin = Justine(according to Game Arts... heh heh), you > can still write JASTIN and no one can flame you. Even if SUU is obviously > Sue, you can still say SUU and no one can deny you that right because > that's the way you write it. Quite true. Don't get me started on those, though... I've had my own set of headaches with the Grandia character names too . Especially since Game Arts contradicts themselves in print! ("Bahl" in the soundtrack notes, "Barl" in Grandia Digital Museum...- and no attempt in the "Grandia Perfect Adventure Guide" ) And since I can't quite figure out how "Myuren" comes out "Mullen" romanized, I go with the katakana spelling just like you do . --Richard
