| "Adolescence Mokushiroku" |
"Shoujo Kakumei Utena: Adolescence Mokushiroku" (The Revelation
of Adolescence, or Adolescence Apocalypse) is the official title of
the Utena movie, due for release in Summer of 99. Director Ikuhara has
stated that "This will be a film no children can see" and that "I want
to show the kinds of sins that people struggle to carry". Official
release date in Japan is 8/14/99.The unfulfilled love story of Utena and Touga is a central point of this movie- an event that happened between them in the past that resonates into their future... The movie is NOT a direct continuation of the series; it's a 'parallel world' to the original story, where some elements are retained and others are discarded. However, much of the 'old formula' of the series DOES seem to have remained intact to the theatrical version... The story feels 'streamlined' and more modern. It is DEFINITELY going to be more adult-oriented. Look for MAJOR alterations to the duel formula (the Duel Arena itself has been redesigned) and even the purpose of previously familiar titles such as the "Victor of the Duel". Also, the 'main' Duellists are present, but (at least in the manga version of the story), Nanami and all of her supporting cast (Tsuwabuki, the Three Stooges, Keiko-tachi) are absent. Also seeming to be absent this round is Chu-chu. Scenes that have appeared in trailers and are of special mention include a gorgeous 'dance' sequence, the appearance of an "Utena Car", what looks to be an intense revelation about Touga's past, at least one Utena/Anshi girl/girl love scene, and a Juri/Utena duel that goes out of the Arena and into the campus of Ootori itself, as well as a subplot (and possible resolution) involving Juri and Shiori... Other changes from the series include a new voice-actor (Mitsuhiru Oikawa, who has a webpage you can visit [here]) and revamped character design for Akio, as well as new costumes all around, and some AMAZING alterations to Ootori Gakuen (see "The Stage"). The Castle of Illusion appears to have gone through a 'slimming down'. The film will appear on a double bill with "Cyber Team Akihabara 2011" in Japanese theatres. Advance tickets (with accompanying special phone card) were sold on 3/20. No word of any kind on a US release from Software Sculptors, who has currently licensed and released only episodes 1-13 of the Utena television series at this time.

On March 24th, a special issue of Bessatsu Shoujo Comic was
released containing the first half of a 180-page NEW UTENA MANGA,
adapting the story of Adolescence Mokushiroku! The second half of
the adaptation will be released in another special issue of the same
magazine on 7/24/99.. so get those orders in NOW! (FULL SPOILERS! I mean it!)

Addendum 5/28/99: I'm still looking into an apparent problem some of
you are having with the copy of the trailer on this site. I have no
problems downloading and playing it from here, so I'm not entirely sure
what the problem is. It SHOULD run fine under Windows Media Player, XING
Player, and any other program capable of reading .mpg files. But I am
checking it out, so hopefully there'll be an answer to this soon. |
