1. The Magician represents action, consciousness, and the power
to create. He is divinely inspired in his actions. If in reverse,
it stands for failure or power used for destructive purposes. Before him
lie the symbols to the four suits of Tarot: the Sword, the Wand, the Cup
and the Pentacle. (Most people place the Fool as the first card of the
Major Arcana, so it's been speculated that Clamp plans to use the Fool
for the last volume.)
Kamui is the main character of X. He has returned to
Tokyo after years of absence. As soon as he arrives, two opposing forces
are drawn towards him. There are the Dragons of Earth, seven individuals
gathered together to cause the destruction of Earth, believing that apocalypse
will cleanse the world of humanity's abuse. Against them are the Dragons
of Heaven, seven individuals hoping to save humanity from destruction;
each controls a kekkai, which is sort of a protective linchpin for the
Earth. So if the Dragons of Earth destroy all the kekkais, they can destroy
civilization. Each group hopes to align Kamui to their side because he
has the power to lead either side to success. (It's been foreordained.)
Actually, Kamui doesn't give a toss for either side and has his own reasons
for coming back to Tokyo. Although Kamui can be arrogant and moody , he
is fiercely protective of his childhood friends Fuuma and Kotori.
"I don't know what it is about fecundity that so appalls."
-- Annie Dillard
3. The Empress represents fertility, creativity and contentment.
Reversed, it can mean war and destruction.
Kanoe, an obviously fertile person, is the seer and leader
of the Dragons of Earth. She is the younger sister of Hinoto. Kanoe doesn't
have the same powers that Hinoto does, but she is able to foresee the future
by eavesdropping on her sister's dreams.
4. The Emperor, the father figure in comparison to the mother
figure of the Empress, represents authority and leadership. Reversed,
it means weak character.
Kyouga Monou, the father of Kotori and Fuuma, is the head priest
at the Tokagusha shrine and hiding a deadly secret that will eventually
prove his undoing.
5. The Hierophant represents the conformity of society.
Reversed, it represents unconventionality.
Seiichiro is one of the Dragons of Heaven, motivated by the
desire to protect his wife and child. He also shares his name with Clamp's
real-life magazine editor.
