mandate

First, this is not about hate, it's about communication. Actually, it's just advertising. Only you are advertising a message, not a company or a trend. You are a human billboard, and you are using the space to spread a worthwhile message, to change the world (thus, the name human billboard for good not evil).

It's important that you have some verbal arsenal to tote when you comments on your shirt. This is your chance to get someone else to consider the alternatives. Use it wisely. Remember human beings are inherently good (?), they are just apathetic and let bad things happen. More passion, less apathy.

True story: My sister wore the Satan is Proud of the United States shirt to lunch with a friend of hers. This friend suggested that statement was racist. My sister replied that the shirt was not about the people of the country, but the actions of the nation. That many of the things the United States has done are things that satan would be proud of, and she didn't think anyone could disagree with that. And a long silence followed.

Oh, also, this is not a big money making operation. Considering the initial investment costs and half-assed marketing, this is definately not for profit. The purpose is to share my resources with like-minded people.

process

Human billboard shirts are hand made, one at a time, in the dark cellar-esque depths of my one bedroom apartment. The first giant screens of silk, through which the ink is squeegied, were donated by a friend, who had adopted them from a friend, who had moved to Korea.

It's a VERY home grown operation. My unprofessional set-up has improved drastically, andthe magic of silk screen photo emulsion yeilds high quality results, which astonished even me!

Previously shirts were purchased from Value Village, Goodwill, the BFM Thrift Store and so on. The current batch of shirts that I print on are "second hand" in that I bought them from a fellow small business shirt maker who was getting rid of her old stock. But they have never been worn before. Some of these shirts are made in Mexico. I am not sure how I feel about that. If you have a problem with it you should email me first so i can let you know which ones. This was a coincidence, it won't happen again.

Because of the handmade nature of the "product", there may be flaws and "imperfections, proof they were made by the hard working, indigenous people of..." Edmonton, Alberta. Sometimes ink gets where it shouldn't, sometimes it doesn't go where it should. Usually this looks rather cool. But don't worry, I am a perfectionist who would never let something ugly be shipped to a stranger.

As for washing, everything should be prime for machine wash. Of course, hand washing never hurt anything. Machine Dry also should not harm it too much, although you may experience cracking of the ink. But that's just so indy, it's damn cool.

ordering

Because everything is custom made to order, you must tell me what type of shirt you would like the message on. You can select the size in ladies' or men's, and for an extra tight fit there is the child's size option. Styles are listed as the t-shirt, hoodie, sweatshirts, and longsleeve shirts.

Once I know what you want, I will go and find something suitable. When I find something I will email you back telling you when you can expect the shipment. All shirts are $20, plus $5 shipping.

Customs: I can just imagine a Satan shirt getting stopped at customs. Treasonous and seditious materials are prohibited items to ship into the United States.

This will be a lot of fun! I'm so excited about sending things out.

currency

I wish I could just good old-fashioned barter system this baby, but alas. Buying me dinner won't get you a shirt (doing my dishes might, though).

Cost: CND$20 + $5 shipping and handling.

Why PayPal?
Why would I, a nice little communist* girl, use PayPal to receive your money? well, at this point in the history of the internet, most people expect to have to buy stuff with a credit card, and most trust PayPal to do it safely. Paypal also accepts some forms of debit card, apparently, or can take money straight from your bank account (!!!).

I hate PayPal/I don't have a credit card. Can I pay with money order?
Of course! But you will have to e-mail your order to me at goodness@humanbillboard.net, and we can arrange things from there.

questions

Ask me questions! I want to answer them. Do so at goodness@humanbillboard.net!

Are you a communist?

No! I'm not a communist. I have recently beccome a capitalist, and oddly this little project has made me realize my feelings about capitalism. The thing that sucks about capitalism is working shitty jobs for someone else all day long so you can pay your rent and then you are broke and hate the world and go drink beer with your friends (or without) to forget about it. You can't afford to do your own projects and you don't have time to. But if you take risks money is this big crazy game. It's kind of and advenure and you get a sense of self determination.
