Actually, the first album is pretty darn great. There's not a bad song on
it. Having said that, the second album is even more impressive and
beautiful. And (some will dispute me) there's not a bad song on that album,
either!
The quality is exceptional in both, with full orchestration and high-quality
singing (and expert composing, arrangement and conducting by the famous
Kouhei Tanaka), but the second album for ST2 shines even brighter. This is
because the series was such a hit that they could put huge amounts of money
into the second soundtrack and recruit HUGE orchestral forces, with a
resulting manifold increase in richness and engineering.
If you're a Sakura Taisen fan, you owe it to yourself to get both vocal
collections... and the live album (which duplicates most of the songs from
the first collection in "live format" as sung in the musical by the same
seiyuu, but has the added feature of a different version of "Kono yo wa
tanoshii", the wonderful "Gekijou" song which is sung at the end of each
drama CD. And the OAV soundtrack, too!
I must say that Akio Suyama is a good voice actor, but does not sing well
nor does he act well "live", unlike his fellow seiyuu. In the musical, BTW,
Akio Suyama is on-stage acting- more or less- during this song, but Kouhei
Tanaka and a wonderful female voice actually are singing the song in the
production!
Anyway, you can't go wrong with any of the albums.
