The games are indeed all in Japanese, and the text is rather important,
especially in the LIPS aspect. However, there are numerous walktrhoughs
and translations on the 'net.
There's a full translation of ST, for people who don't know a word of
japanese.
There's full translations of the LIPS on Ming's page.
The one I liked best was Nickel's Ichirou diary, which is a summary of
what went on. This is good if you know some Japanese basics and can get
through the adventure portion with no problem, but you don'treally get the
history/military mumbo jumbo...
