Domestic Gundam Goods

Twenty years into Gundam's history, it's finally making its first foray into the U.S. market. Bandai's AnimeVillage.com subsidiary has produced a first brace of domestic video releases, accompanied by translated comics from Viz Communications and MixxZine. We have no word as yet on additional domestic goods, but we'll note them here as they surface.

Mobile Suit Gundam I, II and III
Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket
Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory
At last, at last, at long last! Bandai's AnimeVillage.com subsidiary has released English versions of these animated works. Initially sold exclusively through Bandai's AnimeVillage.com Web site, the tapes are now available through selected retail outlets.

All three titles are available in subtitled VHS video format, and an English-dubbed version of Gundam 0083 is also available. Dubbed versions of the original Gundam movies are being released through retail channels only, where they're distributed by Pioneer Entertainment. (The first Gundam movie dub is now on sale, though we should warn you that the script is really awful.)

AnimeVillage.com pricing is as follows: The subtitled Mobile Suit Gundam I, II and III carry a suggested retail price of $29.98 apiece ($23.98 directly from AnimeVillage.com), and are available as a $60 boxed set ($48 direct). The two tapes of the subtitled Gundam 0080, and the four tapes of the subtitled Gundam 0083, are priced at $29.98 each ($23.98 direct) or $120 for a six-tape boxed set ($96 direct). The first six volumes of the dubbed Gundam 0083 are priced at $19.98 per tape ($15.98 direct), and the single-episode seventh volume is $14.98 ($11.98 direct).

Domestic Gundam Merchandise

Mobile Suit Gundam 0079
Viz Communications is publishing Kazuhisa Kondo's lovingly faithful adaptation of the original Mobile Suit Gundam television series. The first volume will consist of eight issues, priced at $2.95 apiece ($3.50 Canadian). See the Viz Communications site for ordering and contact info.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Blue Destiny
Mizuho Takayama's comic adaptation of this Sega Saturn video game was serialized in MixxZine (now Tokyo Pop), and a Pocket Manga compilation was released on August 21 - you can order it from Mixx's Tokyo Pop Shop. See our Works page for The Blue Destiny for some story notes, and see Mixx Online for more information on the magazine.

Sunrise Animation Film Comics
Mobile Suit Gundam 0083
A comic adaptation of the Gundam 0083 video series published by Viz Comics. As a "film comic," it uses frames from the animation as comic strip panels. Thirteen issues were published from 1993 to 1994, priced at $4.95 apiece. Each is 48 pages, including a few pages of background information.

Gundam Mobile Suit I, II and III
An English edition of creator Yoshiyuki Tomino's three-volume novelization of the original Gundam series. The books were published under Ballantine Books's Del Rey imprint from 1990 to 1991 under the titles "Awakening," "Escalation" and "Confrontation," each priced at $4.95 and numbering 224 pages. Long out of print, they can still be found in used book stores. But beware - the story in the novels is drastically different from that of the animation!

Gundam 0079 The War For Earth
An original adventure game for Windows 95 and the Power Macintosh, developed by Presto Studios and briefly published by Bandai Digital Entertainment in early 1998. While the game play was unspectacular, it featured gorgeous computer graphics and lots of background material. Rumor has it that this was actually on sale for a few weeks before BDE imploded, so you may be able to find a copy if you search diligently enough.
