Commercial Sites

Here are are some of the companies that bring you Gundam and its associated merchandise, both in Japan and in the United States. If you have a suggested addition, let us know at scorpio@best.com.

AnimeVillage.com
An online business run by Bandai Entertainment, the Bandai subsidiary that's brought Gundam to the U.S. and Canada. AnimeVillage.com is, at least for now, the only source for these domestic releases. In addition to direct video sales, the site also hosts discussion boards and live chats, for which (free) registration is required.

Bandai [JAPANESE]
The entertainment juggernaut that holds the Gundam franchise. Though the animation is done by Bandai's Sunrise subsidiary, Bandai has a lock on such key merchandise as videos, laser discs and model kits. The company's Web site has a searchable listing of new products which includes many of the model kits, as well as a page devoted to the latest video games.

Gundam Perfect Web [JAPANESE]
Launched in August 1998, this is Bandai's official Gundam Web site for the Japanese audience. After a strong start, it's scaled back to covering almost nothing but Bandai promotional campaigns - you won't find much else that's newsworthy here.

Sunrise [JAPANESE]
The animation studio that fills our empty lives with the glory of Gundam. Sunrise's primary online presence is on Japan's NiftyServe service. On its Web site, you'll find info on NiftyServe's Sunrise Station, plus material on current TV shows and video series.

Bandai America
Bandai's U.S. branch, home of Tamagotchi and toys galore.

Hobby Japan [JAPANESE]
The home page of the Gundam fan's modelling magazine, with information on the latest issue and notice of upcoming book releases.

Mediaworks [JAPANESE]
Though its specialty is video games, this publisher has lots of Gundam books in its online catalog. There's also a page with information on the latest issue of Dengeki Hobby magazine.

Kadokawa [JAPANESE]
The publisher of NewType magazine has a section devoted to Comics & Animation publications, where you'll find listings for some upcoming Gundam books.

Asahiya Shuppan [JAPANESE]
Publisher of the highly-recommended Mobile Suit Gundam the Movies film comics series.

ASCII Corp. [JAPANESE]
Publisher of the bimonthly "20th anniversary tribute magazine" G20. A total of nine volumes of this special magazine will be published through the end of 1999, each with a generous helping of trivia, essays and general weirdness.

Starchild [JAPANESE]
This King Records subsidiary is the label that releases most Gundam soundtracks. Its online catalog provides cover images and track listings for each album.

Studio Hard [JAPANESE]
You may not recognize the name, but these folks are the writers of many beloved Gundam reference books from Bandai, Mediaworks, and Keibunsha - including the legendary MS ERA.

Anime Web Turnpike: Miscellaneous Companies
More anime specialty stores than you can shake a stick at. We can only personally vouch for a couple, but you have lots of other choices. If you're curious, our faves include model-kit shop HobbyLink Japan, Tokyo Pop, and Nikaku Animart.
