Van Slanzar de Fanel (Fanelia)バァン・スランザール・デ・ファーネル(ファーネリア)King of Fanelia and the pilot of the Guymelef Escaflowne The death of Van's father and the disappearance of his older brother left this young warrior prince to rule his small rural kingdom of Fanelia. Before he can attain the throne and ride the legendary Guymelef mecha known as Escaflowne however, he must slay a dragon for its Energist crystal. Although brash and inexperienced early on, he thrusts himself into the forefront of the Gaea War against the Zaibach Empire. This greater struggle eventually leads him to face his own inner turmoil over his family's past and the mysterious girl from the Mystic Moon.
Note: During the anime's development, Van was initially named Dai Ginga (homonymous with "Great Silver River" or "Great Galaxy" in Japanese with "ga" employing the same kanji as in creator Shouji Kawamori's name). After character designer Nobuteru Yuuki insisted strenuously that his name be changed, Dai Ginga became Van Slanzar de Fanelia, the name used in Katsu-Aki's shounen manga version. (Katsu-Aki says he was the one who gave Van's first name the doubled "a" in Japanese.) Later proposed names also included Van El Fanel (with a nonelongated "a" in Fanel) before Van Slanzar de Fanel was finalized as his name.
Also during development, Yuuki experimented with some initial designs in which Van had one red right eye and one left green eye instead of two red eyes. (The intended idea was to hide his left green eye with his long front locks of hair for the entire beginning of the series until a pivotal moment in the story. This plot device designed to reveal Van's mixed ancestry was abandoned in favor of a far more dramatic approach.) Seki is one of the relatively few male voices with a significant (and devoted) fan following, thanks mainly to his roles as Domon in Mobile Fighter G Gundam, Van, and Kamui in X.
