The commander of the special duty organization, Nerv.
The commander of Nerv which was organized for the purpose of inquiry, study, and annihilation of the Angels(Shito), and responsible for the E-Project, which was the creating of Evangelion. Also, he is father of Shinji Ikari. He witnessed the second impact 15 years ago.
He makes decisions by hook or crook, so he treats Shinji as a reserved pilot. Cruel guy. Ritsuko says he is "clumsy at life." She says Rei is clumsy as well.
It's still unclear that why Gendoh treats Rei as the precious one.
Along with the commander of Nerv, his group, "secret association, Seele" is planning "The Human Being Perfect Supplement Plan" (I'm not sure if I've translated right. It's Jinrui Hokan Keikaku "人類補完計画" in Japanese). Details about this plan are still unclear. The first human being "ADAM" must be the key to solve the meaning of this plan.
