With vastly superior Earth Federation mobile suits on the way, the aging Zaku II seemed to have reached the end of its lifespan, but the Zeonic Company's engineers made last one attempt to bring the design up to date. The R-2 type was a radical upgrade of the R-1 High Mobility Type, with new lightweight materials, increased leg armor, and 18% more propellant. A test run of four units were produced at Zeon's Granada base.
Ultimately, three of the R-2 test units were assigned to ace pilots, notably Major Johnny Ridden of the Mobile Assault Force. Ridden used this high-performance Zaku in many guerilla attacks on Federation supply ships until he was transferred to the Ace Corps test pilot team in late October, UC 0079.
