Zeonic's R-2 type Zaku, designed as an interim substitute for Zeon's delayed next-generation space mobile suit, found itself facing a challenger from a rival company. In October of UC 0079, Zeon's generals evaluated the R-2 type against Zimmad's candidate, a new version of the MS-09 Dom adapted for space combat. Though the R-2 type's performance was superior in many respects, it was deemed too costly and too difficult to mass-produce. The project was canceled, and three of the four prototypes were assigned to notable ace pilots.
The third recipient of an R-2 prototype was Colonel Robert Gilliam. Though little is known about Gilliam's activities, he is reported to have participated in the Battle of A Bao A Qu at the end of the war.
