Just as Zeon's ground forces had transitioned from the Zaku II to the MS-07 Gouf and MS-09 Dom, Zeon's space forces planned to replace the aging mobile suit with the next-generation MS-11. However, the appearance of the Earth Federation's prototype mobile suits threw Zeon's plans into disarray. The MS-11 project was restarted from scratch under a new model number, to incorporate beam weapons like those of the Federation's Gundam. The R-2 type Zaku II was created as a potential substitute for this now-delayed mobile suit, using parts and technologies from the scuttled project (including the new generator developed for the MS-11). However, Zeonic was not the only company with a proposal for an interim space mobile suit...
The second of the three ace pilots to receive an R-2 prototype was Lieutenant Colonel Gabby Hazzard of the Mobile Assault Force. Little is known of Hazzard's combat record, though records indicate that this pilot fought at the Battle of A Bao A Qu that ended the One Year War.
