Mobile Suit Gundam
Mobile Suit Variation

Format: Plastic model series
Story Date: Universal Century 0079
More Info: Mechanics

Six months after the conclusion of the first Gundam television series, toy manufacturer Bandai released the first Gundam plastic model kits. As Gundam's popularity grew in re-runs, and then boomed with the release of the compilation movies, Bandai capitalized on the phenomenon by producing a series of mobile suit variants in model form. The first in the series was released in April 1983, a year after the premiere of the Gundam III movie.

These mobile suit variants were created by Kunio Okawara, the mechanical designer for the original series. The kit manuals and related publications provide detailed back stories for each variant, including biographical details on the ace pilots of the One Year War and information on the mobile suits' development histories, all penned by modeling guru Masahiro Oda.

We've also lumped a related series of mobile suits into the Mobile Suit Variation category. A quartet of bizarre amphibious mobile suits created for the original Gundam television series were never used in the animation, though they were released in model kit form. Thus, we've included this orphaned "Agg series" - the cannon-fingered Juagg, tentacled Aggugai, tunnel-drilling Agg, and close combat-specialized Zogok - in our MSV listings.
