In 1984, comics publisher Kodansha announced its plans for an original Gundam story, a spinoff sequel by TV series scriptwriter Hiroyuki Hoshiyama which was to feature an array of new designs by mechanical designer Kunio Okawara. Titled "MS-X," the story would pit Earth Federation ace pilot Colonel Den Berserk against a menagerie of enemy mobile suits spawned by Zeon's "Pezun Project." Many of these Zeon mobile suits were based on concepts from TV series director Yoshiyuki Tomino's 52-episode story outline.
However, no sooner had Kodansha published Okawara's new designs and started hyping the upcoming story, than the Sunrise animation studio announced the imminent debut of Z Gundam, an official television series sequel. With its own storyline cast into doubt, Kodansha scrapped the planned serial, throwing the orphaned MS-X designs into limbo.
