Devil Hunter Yohko

Another typical morning at Yohko's...         At first glance Yohko Mano seems like your typical everyday 16 year old highschool student. When we first meet her she pretty much thinks the same thing. She lives in a typical house with her mother and grandmother and attends a pretty typical highschool where she takes typical classes and dreams of typically handsome boys. Nothing that most 16 year old girls don't do. In short order, however, Yohko comes to learn that she has an important family heritage. Important not only to herself, but all of mankind.
One day while swimming in a public pool she suddenly finds herself under attack from a demon, not exactly your typical occurance, and during her struggle to free herself she somehow manages to draw on some inner form of energy that allows her to escape. After telling her grandmother of the experience, Yohko comes to learn of her true heritage as a Mamono, or Devil, Hunter. Her grandmother was the 107th and now she becomes the 108th. Her mother managed to avoid being the 108th by having sex before her powers manifested which goes a long way to explaining why Yohko's mom is encouraging her to have sex as soon as possible when we first meet her. Needless to say, the demons were not ignorant of Yohko's lineage and this is what prompted the attack in the pool. Now they're making plans to end her life... or worse.Another set of clothes sacrificed for the greater good... Between slavering demons out to kill her and possessed zombie boys trying to deflower her, Yohko's life is about to get a lot more complicated as she now has to deal with riding the world of demons on top of passing her calculus exam!
Yohko receives a Yoma ring from her grandmother which, in combination with her hair ornaments made of a magical stone called Shimi-Seki, act as the focusing agents for her powers. With these she can summon forth her Soul Sword, perform some healing, control time, and generate bursts of energy. Her hair ornaments also warn of danger. She can also transform into her red battle outfit as seen in the picture above. A bit of an embarassing process as it causes her current outfit to shred leaving her momentarily naked as her new outfit forms around her. A transformation that's always popular with the guys. As the series continues Yohko meets up with other would be Devil Hunters who come to her to train.
The series is available here in the United States from A.D. Vision in both subbed and dubbed formats. In all there are 6 episodes ranging in length from 30 to 45 minutes currently available. I am not currently aware if it happens to be based on a manga series or not, but I don't think it is.

Good Rating Les' Review:

The animation quality is pretty good and the music worthwhile. The stories are a horror/comedy mix which, while somewhat on the mature side due to threats of sexual violence in the first story, keep the potential nightmare factor to a minimum. A.D. Vision did a good job with the subtitles as well. I especially like the way the subtitles for ghosts waver back and forth on the screen. Not necessary, I know, but a cute touch. I've only seen the first three stories, but I like what I've seen and intend to collect them all. I'll update this review as I see each new tape.

Good Rating Hairboy's Review:

My first exposure to this title was in the old Mega Drive game of the same name and based on the series. It was a fun game and this is a fun series. It's nothing spectacular, but it is fun nonetheless. I would prefer to see more demon fighting and less teenage angst though. I would like to see a story with adults doing the same type of thing, but without the tendency to make it into a softporn/monster slayer story we see so much. I like it, but would like to see more character development and less cutesy sidekicks
