| Villains | Secondary Characters | Episode Synopses (Japanese Series) | It's rare that you get an anime without any bad guys. In Pokemon, the usual pain-in-the-butt is the Rocket Gang (AKA "Team Rocket" in the English version), whose goal is to capture Pikachu and any other rare Pokemon they can get their hands on. Unfortunately, they're so incompetent that they rarely, if never, succeed in what they're doing. ^_^; the Rocket Gang is composed of Kojiro (James), Musashi (Jessie), Nyase (Meowth), and their Pokemon Arbo (Ekans) and Dogase (Koffing). Kojiro and Musashi are the two people you see in the picture to the left; Musashi's the woman, and Kojiro's the man. Whenever they show up in the anime (usually at the rate of once per episode), they always make themselves known with this speech: (the translation's to the right, but it's not the same as the English version, which is below)
And for those of you who want to know what it is in the English version of the anime...
Dare to compare! Download the MPEG of The Speech in both English and Japanese! Good, me too. ^_^; The Rocket Gang's mostly in the anime for comic relief, but there's actually a motive behind them. Sakaki, the leader of the organization that they belong to, is bent on world domination; why he wants the Rocket Gang to capture Pokemon is beyond me, but their role in the organization is less than nothing; you know, like the proverbial "lackey"? Nyase (Meowth) was the leader's Pokemon, but he got ditched in favor of Persian, which is an evolved form of Nyase. Thanks to Shou Tsurugi for giving me all this info, and to Jeff Schrader for supplying the English-version of the speech! Japanese voice actors:
Shigeru (Gary) And of course, every hero has a rival that wants to one-up him every chance he gets. In Pokemon, Shigeru (Gary) is the one who wants to be better than Satoshi (Ash). Grandson of Professor Ookido (Professor Oak), he thinks that since his grandfather's in the Pokemon business he should be the one to claim the title of "greatest Pokemon trainer in the world". He's selfish and egotistical, even having his own group of cheerleaders to root him on in the first episode of the anime ("Gary, Gary, he's our man! Go Gary!"). His role is pretty much the same in the Game Boy games; as your rival, he ends up fighting you at major points in the adventure (including right after you get your first Pokemon), always becoming stronger as your Pokemon advance in level.
