The following is a list of 10 things that you can do to get involved with the Tibetan freedom movement. 1. Request Tibetan citizenship. This symbolic action is an appeal to the right of self-determination of the peoples of Tibet. By signing this petition, you are stating that you recognize Tibet as a legitimate state separate from China. Once a significant number of requests are compiled (there is already over 10 000), the list will be submitted to the Tibetan Government in Exile for appropriate usage. See here to sign your name. 2. Get informed. Understand what is happening is the pre-requisite for positive and effective action. There are a number of good books about Tibet (see our Reading List), as well as hundreds of Tibet support groups throughout the world (see our Links section) which provide a diverse range of contributions. 3. Share your knowledge. Simply speaking to others about Tibet is an excellent way to spread awareness and encourage others to get involved. 4. Participate with SFT. Here is your opportunity to sign on-line petitions, receive e-mail updates, join us at a meeting or gain some volunteer experience at one of our events. See the membership section for details on how to join for free. 5. Adopt a Tibetan Nun. For 30$ a month you can sponsor a refugee nun in India through the Tibetan Nuns Project. This non-profit organization was set up by Rinchen Khando Choegyal, sister-in-law of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and currently supports over 500 nuns living in exile. For more information, see the Tibetan Nuns Project. 6. Take action to support human rights. For recent campaigns such as Free the Drapchi 14, Boycott Made-in-China, Free the Panchen Lama, and Release Tenzin Delek Rinpoche, see our campaigns section. 7. E-mail your MP. Over 80 Canadian MPs have already endorsed a parliamentarian letter to PM Jean Chretien asking him to convene negotiations between the Dalai Lama and the Government of China. Please copy and paste this letter and sent or e-mail it to your MP, and ask them to sign it and forward it to Jean Chretien. You may include a statement stating why you think it is important that they consider doing this. Make sure to be brief and polite, so that your suggestion is taken seriously. For more information, see here. 8. Proudly display your pro-Tibet merchandise. Students for a Free Tibet has a variety of stickers, buttons, T-shirts and posters. See our merchandise section for ordering information. 9. Meditate or a say a prayer for Tibet. This can be a powerful yet frequently overlooked method of compassionate action. 10. Travel wisely. China is trying to use tourism in Tibet to legitimize its rule there. Most tourist dollars go to Chinese hands and do little to help impoverished Tibetan communities. If you decide to go, try to patronize Tibetan businesses. Try here for more travel tips.
