With over 650 chapters worldwide, Students for a Free Tibet is probably the largest student-run grassroots organization in the world. SFT was started in August 1994 in order to speak out on behalf of the people of Tibet. We recognize the historical and legal status of Tibet as an independent country and support the right of Tibetans to determine their own future. We use various strategies in order to educate campuses and communities about the situation in Tibet, and to turn this awareness into positive action. We work with a variety of other Tibet support groups and human rights organizations. Underlying all of our activities is a commitment to non-violence, recognition for the need for universal responsibility and an interdependent world, and a firm belief that young people can and must take leadership in changing our world. Our campaigns focus on the following themes:
2. Economic Impact: To use whatever means possible to ensure that China's illegal occupation of Tibet is one that is unprofitable. This can be achieved by campaigning against large corporations making profit in Tibet, and calling for international boycotts. 3. Social Awareness: To spread social awareness in our own community about Tibet and encourage others to get involved in the Tibetan cause. 4. Raise Funds: To conduct a variety of fundraisers in order to raise money, which will in turn be invested in other non-profit organizations, specifically ones that directly provide urgently needed assistance to Tibetans. We encourage any form of participation, since every little bit counts. Participation in many of our campaigns can be done on your own time, whenever it is convenient. We also look forward to a variety of events in the upcoming year at the U of A, including a film showing, the Tibetan Bazaar, fundraisers, and the Tibetan Freedom Concert. Many volunteers will be needed so please keep in touch, and most importantly, enjoy yourself and be proud that you are making a positive contribution to the lives of many people.
