The SD ("Super Deformed") Gundam series is at once the most bizarre and most successful spinoff of the Gundam saga. Originally a mere parody, in which mobile suits and characters alike are compressed into cute caricatures whose heads are as big as their entire bodies, SD Gundam has gone on to develop its own complex cosmology, including several alternate worlds with their own original characters and stories. During the height of the SD Gundam boom, from 1988 to 1993, it actually outsold orthodox Gundam merchandise and spawned a series of animated videos and movies.
In addition to animated features, the SD Gundam product line includes toys, models, games, trading cards, and music albums. Notable highlights are the Gatchapon Senshi, rubber figures that are sold via vending machines; the BB Senshi, inexpensive model kits that fire plastic pellets; and the ever-popular SD Gundam console games, the most recent of which is the new G Generation series.
In addition to the "normal" SD Gundam world, populated by the familiar cast of the mainstream Gundam saga, this parody series encompasses several of its own alternate worlds. SD Gundam Sengokuden is set in feudal Japan, with a samurai ethos inspired by the Musha Gundam from Plamo Kyoshiro. SD Gundam Gaiden ("Side Story") is a Western-style medieval setting, starring the Knight Gundam. Gundlander is likewise medieval in tone, but reflects the aesthetics of sword-and-sorcery role-playing games, turning the mobile suits into creepy monsters. And in SD Commando Gundam, the eponymous Commando Gundam leads a G-ARMS team of weapon-covered military-themed mobile suits.
