Himura Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku

What can I say? How could I ever do him justice? He looks like a girl. He sounds like a girl. He says "Oro." (Aaagh! He's so cute!) Unless you really piss him off, he's sweet, shy, excessively polite. He cooks, he babysits, he does the laundry. If you lock him in a messy shed, he cleans it before escaping. (See anime episode #1. It took me about 5 watchings before I noticed this. You know when Kaoru shuts him in the shed? It's a total pit. When she comes back and finds him gone, it's spotless.) (Aaagh! He's so domestic!)

Then there's the scar, the shadowed past, the inner turmoil, the loneliness, and the latent alter-ego that haunts him. Seeking atonement, he dedicates himself to protecting others at his own expense. This desire brings him to Kamiya Dojo, while a different impulse causes him to stay. He finds new friends who become a family, only to discover that his very presence often puts them in danger...(Aaagh! He's so troubled!)

cute picture of Kenshin leaning by a wall And then when the time comes for the bad guys to get their butts kicked, and you hear the first chords of "Kimi wa dare wo mamotte iru," and the sakabatou starts flashing, well, I'm not a big fan of violence, but it's hard not to be impressed with a guy who can do what he does with a sword. As someone pointed out on SASS, the combination of overwhelming power with an absolute refusal to abuse that power is potent. Add humility to the mix, and the result is irresistable. (Aaagh! He's so heroic!)

I read or heard somewhere that Watsuki-sensei plans to give RK a happy ending... being a happy ending kind of person, I hope it's true. (Personally, I want a big wedding with cherry blossoms floating through the air. Sniffle.) "Without a doubt, I've known tears...it's all right to cry if you want to...it'll change to a wing, always in your heart." This series has made me do plenty of crying, which is why I love it. But Kenshin deserves a happy ending if any character ever did.

Not every picture of himself makes me want to fall down drooling, just most of them. The ones on this page are some that are particularly dear to my heart. There are no scary pictures here because it's not a shrine to Hitokiri Battousai, although he too can be pretty impressive, in a terrifying, scream-and-run sort of way. On the other hand, if the darker side is what floats your boat, be sure to visit Battousai no Miko's excellent tribute at:

Have fun worshipping!

Oh, and if you should eventually tire (ha ha ha!) of gazing upon the spellbinding visage of my favorite sword-wielding girly x-scarred boy, you are also welcome to pay your respects at the very humble Chibi-Shrine to Suzukaze Mayo (Kenshin's seiyuu.)
