Rurouni Kenshin Act 221: Yahiko's True Fight, Part 3

As Kujiranami stands poised to blast the boy into oblivion, Yahiko leaps between them.

Shinichi: *watching in terror* YOUNG MAN!!!

Yahiko: *grabbing the boy* Ku!!!

The cannon fires with a massive roar.

Sidetext: Yahiko... in a desperate situation!!

Using his own body, Yahiko shields the young boy from the explosion as they are both flung into the air, surrounded by fire and smoke.

Act 221: Yahiko's True Fight, Part Three

Sidetext: The number one student of Kamiya Kasshin Ryuu, Myoujin Yahiko! Honor and courage and gentleness!!

Outraged, Shinichi and the other policemen prepare to charge.

Shinichi: Young man------!!

Suddenly, a massive hand lunges out of the billowing smoke. Kujiranami lurches forward, sending the policemen flying from his blows. His eyes are white, almost unseeing; froth fills his mouth.

Kujiranami: GAAA!!! BATTOUSAIII-----

He raises his weapon-arm and aims at the silhouette of Yahiko and the boy, who are still airborne.

Kujiranami: GAAAA!!!

He fires repeatedly; explosions of flame and smoke obscure everything. Hearing the noises, Tsubame quickly lifts her head. On the street where she kneels, passersby stop in their tracks and listen to the blasts in the distance.

Random Passerby 1: Wow. That was even more terrifying than before.

Random Passerby 2: Yeah, there's no hope for anyone who happens to be around there.

Tears trickle from Tsubame's widening eyes.

Tsubame: (Yahiko-kun...) (Yahiko-kun is going to die.....)

Back at the battleground, Kujiranami grimaces with horrible triumph.

Kujiranami: Gu... fu fu fu fu

He lumbers forward into the smoke.

Kujiranami: Now... all the ones who are in the way... have been gotten rid of...

Holding one injured arm, Shinichi climbs to his feet, sweating.

Shinichi: ... Young... man...

Kujiranami turns slightly toward him.

Kujiranami: Where is he... Battousai... Hiding him from me is useless.

Shinichi: *screaming* YOUNG MAN-----!!!

Bruised, battered, and dirty, Yahiko emerges from a pile of wreckage in the street. Beside him is the little boy, frightened, but unscathed.

Yahiko: IT'S ALL RIGHT! THERE'S NO HARM DONE!!

He pants heavily, wincing with one eye closed. The recovering policemen stare in disbelief... and Kujiranami's eyes widen.

Police A: N... no...

Police B: ...harm done...

Tears well in the eyes of the boy next to Yahiko.

Shinichi: No... certainly.... The child, there's no harm done to him... (In that blast, he used his body as a shield, putting the protection of the child before all else...) *smiling* What a guy...

Kujiranami: *staring silently* .......

Gripping his shinai, Yahiko gets firmly to his feet.

Yahiko: *still panting* Kid, can you run?

Child: Eh?

Yahiko: Can you run all right?

Child: Uh, yeah...

Yahiko: Okay. Your dad must be looking for you, so once I give you a signal, run for the town as fast as you can.

Child: *wide-eyed* !

Smiling, Yahiko lays his hand on the boy's head.

Yahiko: It's all right. You're strong. You didn't even so much as scream in that storm of cannon blasts. Right?

Kujiranami watches them, eyes burning.

Child: R- right!

Yahiko: *with a puff of breath* Okay then. All right, don't turn back even if you get scared.

Kujiranami's eyes widen further.

Yahiko: Just believe in me.

Opening both his eyes, he turns sternly to Kujiranami. Behind him there seems to appear an image of Kenshin, staring with the very same fierce determination to protect.

Yahiko: I will definitely stop that guy!

Pupils contracting wildly in recognition, Kujiranami grips his grenade launcher.

Kujiranami: Battou... sai!!

Yahiko: *to the boy* RUN!!

The child turns and dashes away, his face scrunched in terror, while Kujiranami raises his grenade launcher in mad rage.

Kujiranami: I'VE FOUND YOU, YOU'RE THERE!!! BAT...!?

He charges forward, only to be hindered by Shinichi and the other policemen, who fling themselves on him bodily, grabbing his weapon-arm. Kujiranami tips over backward as the added weight throws him off-balance.

Kujiranami: UGAAAA!

Police C: *shouting* You think we'd let you fire!?

Police D: You think we'd let you fire!?

Police B: You think we'd let you fire!?

Police A: You think we'd let you fire!?

Shinichi: YOU THINK WE'D STAND TO LET YOU FIRE!!?

The figure of the escaping boy retreats safely into the distance.

With a lunge, Kujiranami regains his balance and throws off the policemen. Saliva pours from the corners of his mouth.

Kujiranami: GET OUT OF MY WAY!! BATTOUSAII

A sandaled foot falls quietly, and Kujiranami pauses for a moment. A small hand grips a bamboo sword firmly, without hesitation.

Yahiko: ... Kenshin is in the middle of a fight with himself. It's a very, very important fight... I won't allow the likes of you to bother him...

Stepping forward, Yahiko stands and faces the giant, who stares down at him with crazed eyes. Yahiko stares back up at him, unflinching.

Yahiko: At such a distance, neither of us can get away! SHOWDOWN!!

A few streets over, Tsubame sits, immobilized with dread.

Tsubame: (Yahiko-kun... is going to die... Yahiko-kun...)

She thinks of their talk of a short while ago, and his gesture of comfort when she was crying.

Tsubame: (Yahiko-kun......... Somebody... Somebody save him Save Yahiko-kun... Somebody----...)

Suddenly she remembers another gentle hand on her head, and the smile that accompanied it.

Tsubame: !

Springing to her feet, she takes off down the street at a run, clinging to the thought of the one person who might be roused to help. The remembered smile echoes in her mind as she races, with tears still streaking down her face.

Tsubame: (Kenshin-san... The best swordsman in all of Japan, whom Yahiko-kun admires... SAVE YAHIKO-KUN... KENSHIN-SAN!!!)
